Is Your Dog’s Collar Tight Enough?
Many people do not have their dog’s collar fitting correctly. How do you know if your dog collar fits? If you can slide it over your dog’s head than no it is not tight enough. How can you ensure your dog’s safety if they can Houdini out of their collar on demand? It is NOT uncomfortable or inhumane to have a snug fitting collar! Take your wrist watch for example. If it slips off your wrist every time you lower your arm then what good is it? And if it doesn’t tell the time; just take it off.
Your dog’s collar should fit like your wrist watch. Loose enough that it is comfortable but tight enough so that it will not slip off. Your dog’s collar should also carry up to date identification, in case your dog is lost or found.
If the most powerful men in the Western world wear a comfortable fitting neck tie all day; a snug fitting collar is not going to hurt your dog. However, like most rules in life there are exceptions. Bulldogs, pugs and some border collie mixes for instance have necks that are just wider than their heads, collars can end up being too tight. That brings me on to another topic for another day; harnesses.
